Date of presidential election in Algeria now set

The presidential election will take place a few months earlier than planned in Algeria. The election which was supposed to be held in December 2024 has been brought forward to September 7, the presidency of the republic announced in a press release.

This press release was published at the end of a meeting chaired by the Head of State Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the presence of the heads of the two Chambers of Parliament and the Chief of Staff of the army.

The previous presidential election which was held on December 12, 2019 took place under high tension and saw the victory of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, former Prime Minister of Abdelaziz Bouteflika. He won with 58% of the votes but the vote was marked by an absence of more than 60% of those registered.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune succeeded Abdelaziz Bouteflika. He, who died in September 2021, had pushed to resign two years earlier under pressure from the army and Hirak, a popular protest movement.

No reason has been given to explain the early holding of the next election and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 78, has not yet announced whether he will run for a second term.
