Exterior panel of a Boeing 737 came off in mid-flight

A United Airlines Boeing 737-800 which flew the San Francisco – Medford (United States) route on Friday March 15, 2024 is said to have lost one of its fuselage panels in mid-flight.

139 passengers and six crew members were on board the aircraft. The absence of the part was noted during an inspection carried out after the plane landed.

Checks and investigation

United Airlines said in a statement that the discovery was made “after the aircraft was parked at its gate.”

The American airline assured that the plane would be scrupulously checked and that all necessary repairs would be carried out before the Boeing was returned to service.

“We will also carry out an investigation to better understand how this damage could have been caused,” said the carrier. The plane will remain grounded while waiting.

The missing panel is located at the junction of a wing and the body of the aircraft, near one of the landing gears.
