Tanzanian presidency announces death of former president Ali Hassan Mwinyi

Tanzanian presidency has announced the death of former president Ali Hassan Mwinyi, famous with introducing the East African nation to a market economy, at the age of 98.

Mwinyi succeeded Tanzania’s first post-independence president, Julius Nyerere, who left office in 1985 after 22 years in power.

The presidency said the late president died of lung cancer at Dar es Salaam hospital where he had been receiving treatment since November.

“On behalf of the government, I would like to extend my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this loss,” President Hassan said.

Mwinyi became very famous for introducing free market policies and was in turn replaced by the late Benjamin Mkapa in 1995.
