Senegalese panel suggests elections in June to end political crisis

A Senegalese commission responsible for national dialogue has suggested holding elections in June as a way to end the political crisis the country is going through.

Senegal’s national dialogue commission also recommends that President Macky Sall remain in office until his successor is sworn in, commission member Ndiawar Paye said on Tuesday.

Senegal, set to become an oil and gas producer by the end of the year, has been thrown into an unprecedented political crisis after president Macky Sall postponed the election initially scheduled for Feb. 25.

Several opponents boycotted the negotiations, saying they wanted elections to take place before Macky Sall’s mandate expires in April.

“The recommendation will be sent to Sall who will make the final decision,” Paye is quoted by Reuters as saying.
