Guinea: former opposition leader Oury Bah appointed PM

The head of Guinea’s junta, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, has appointed former opposition leader Mamadou Oury Bah as the country’s prime minister.

The nomination comes a week after the interim president Doumbouya dissolved the government.

His first task will be to resolve the current social crisis in the country. Trade unions have been demanding lower food prices as Guineans struggle with the high cost of living.

He has urged the unions to call off the strike and “highlight what we can do together to solve the big challenges gradually, step by step”.

The new PM is expected to not only set up a new government to replace the one that was dismissed, but also take steps to alleviate the economic hardships facing millions of Guineans.
