Contrasting success of a song evoking alcohol and debauchery

The song Hama Tsimegneha is a big hit, but it also divides opinion in this predominantly Muslim country , as it evokes alcohol and debauchery in the Comoros.

Hama Tsimegneha, which could be translated as “I seem to be taken by vice” or “Looks like I’ve been slumming it”, is a song by Comorian duo KM Boyz and Leg Arzam that is setting the Comoros archipelago alight.

But it also divides it.

For some, it helps to raise awareness among young people; for others, it propagates a degrading image of Comorian youth.

Hama Tsimegneha is everywhere these days: in cabs, on social networks and at the heart of daily discussions. The song is causing quite a stir.

” It’s really a depravity of the morals and customs of our dear country, which is a Muslim country. We won’t tolerate this kind of music in our community, because it can influence the not-so-young to imitate this kind of nonsense, which is harmful to our health first and foremost, and which is harmful to our behavior as Muslims”, raged Toihir, speaking to RFI.

Posted on YouTube on February 9, the clip has already exceeded 145,000 views in less than a week: a remarkable achievement for Comorian artists.

On TikTok, alcoholic imitations of the song by young people are all the rage.

The authors themselves claim not to drink.
