The celebrations continue in Ivory Coast after the Elephants beat Nigeria 2-1 on Sunday evening in the final of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations.
The victory marks a political gain for Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, whose government had been under pressure to get all facilities ready on time.
The Ivorian president had promised to organize “the most beautiful AFCON in history”.
And the political class is unanimously delighted with this victory.
In a press release, Laurent Gbagbo’s PPA-CI hailed “a collective effort and a vibrant spirit of patriotism”.
For his part, PDCI leader Tidjane Thiam described the victory as a “lesson in resilience and determination”.
In this vein, the president of this opposition party congratulates the authorities, and in particular President Alassane Ouattara, on the organization of this AFCON.
The authorities have thus succeeded in creating unity around a common cause, soccer, eclipsing at the same time the debates raised at the beginning of January, following a report by the Court of Auditors, which pointed to problems in the revenue linked to the issuing of identity documents.
This is yet another achievement for the presidential camp in next year’s elections, as the AFCON has highlighted the advanced state of the country’s infrastructure.
