AFCON 2023: a quarter-final without the big favourites

The teams considered favourites for the title were all eliminated in the Round of 16 of this Africa Cup of Nations 2024.

A surprise that the sporting public had not expected.

The cards have been reshuffled and the Top 8 in African soccer is now known.

Reigning African champions and the only nation to have completed a perfect group phase, Senegal were eliminated by Ivory Coast, who were drafted in.

Egypt, reigning African runners-up and seven-time champions, saw their participation cut short in a penalty shoot-out with the DRC.

The dream of Morocco, semi-finalists at the last World Cup, was dashed by South Africa.

No North African representative is to be found among the eight teams to have made it past the quarter-final stage, a feat not seen since AFCON 2013.
