Senegal hit by the curse of the defending champions

Ivory Coast are now in the quarter-finals, having eliminated reigning African champions Senegal on Monday January 29 at Yamoussoukro’s Charles Konan Banny stadium.

A match full of suspense that lasted almost three hours.

The big disappointment of this CAN evening was Senegal’s defeat after a 1-1 draw, followed by extra time which didn’t change the score, and finally a penalty shoot-out (5-4 TAB).

The Ivorians were able to hold off the Lions, who dominated the match from start to finish.

Reigning champions Senegal had thought they would get through to the Round of 16 with little effort against Côte d’Ivoire, who were narrowly edged out by Morocco.

Too serene, Senegal gave their opponents too much room to maneuver after the opening goal in the 4th minute.

The equalizing penalty destabilized them in the 86th minute, and it was a descent into hell that led to their elimination.
