Six people, including three soldiers were sentenced to death on Wednesday January 24 for their involvement in a plot to overthrow the government in 2021 in Ghana.
Nine people, including six military personnel, were tried. Among them, three were acquitted, including a former high-ranking police officer, who walked out of court free.
Arrested in 2021 at a shooting range in Accra as a result of phone tapping, according to documents presented at the trial, the nine men were in possession of locally manufactured weapons, automatic weapons and improvised explosive devices.
The prosecutor also indicated that the accused belonged to an organization called Take Action Ghana (or TAG) and that they had planned to organize demonstrations to overthrow the government.
In Ghana, although the law was amended last July, the abolition of capital punishment concerns “ordinary” crimes: it remains valid for those of “high treason”.
However, the last execution in the country dates back to 1992.
