2 dead and 77 injured in an explosion

An explosion shook more than a dozen buildings, killing 2 and injuring 77 in one of Nigeria’s largest cities, according to reports.

Rescue workers are still digging through the rubble in search of people who may have been trapped. The provisional death toll stands at two, with a further 77 injured.

“The blast was caused by explosives stockpiled for illegal mining operations after investigation,” according to Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde.

“We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies in Oyo State to carry out search and rescue operations,” Makinde said.

The identity of the person who stored the explosives was not immediately specified, and no arrests were announced.

“Investigations are continuing and all those found guilty will be brought to justice,” said Governor Makinde.
