Indian company under investigation

At least 70 children have died in Gambia as a result of the use of toxic cough syrups for children produced by an Indian company.

After the Gambian authorities launched a lawsuit, the World Health Organization issued an alert on these syrups.

According to an investigation launched in India to determine their toxicity, the company is suspected of having falsified tests.

The Indian manufacturer, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, denies any responsibility and states that the syrups were contaminated after manufacture.

In addition, the Indian government claims that laboratory tests showed that the syrups were not toxic.
