Nigeria to use Artificial Intelligence to fight terrorism

The Nigerian army will benefit from the support of the United States to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its fight against terrorism on its soil.

This was stated by Paul Dean, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Office of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability, on Thursday December 7 in Abuja, Nigeria, during a press conference.

“We want to encourage positive applications of artificial intelligence in the military. The initiative we launched last month with our partners is aimed precisely at maximizing the extraordinary value of artificial intelligence in military applications, while ensuring that the international community embraces a set of standards of responsible behavior to reduce the risk of unintended consequences or negative applications,” said Paul Dean.

“We are convinced that when states commit to using this technology in a predictable, transparent, stable and responsible manner, the international community will be able to maximize the benefits while reducing the risks of irresponsible approaches,” explained the US official.

Lately, the Nigerian army has been facing strong criticism after one of its drones accidentally killed 85 civilians in Kaduna state last week.

The United States, which sees itself as an ally of choice for Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, must put in place control mechanisms for the use of cutting-edge technology.

But according to experts, the use of AI could have prevented this obvious error in the tragedy in Kaduna State.
