Air New Zealand plans to use an electric plane from 2026

Air New Zealand announced on Wednesday its plan of becoming the first airline to fly an electric plane, by integrating a battery-powered plane into its fleet from 2026 for freight transport.

New Zealand’s national airline has ordered an Alia electric plane from American aerospace manufacturer Beta Technologies. The device is initially expected to be used to deliver packages and letters across the country.

“We aim to be the first airline to use a new generation aircraft for commercial flights,” Kiri Hannifin, head of sustainable development at Air New Zealand, told AFP.

However, the company has not yet set a date for possible passenger flights aboard electric aircraft.
