According to the Italian Statistics Institute (Istat), 5.6 million people living in Italy, or 9.6% of the population have fallen into extreme poverty.
1.27 million are minors, unable to afford the essentials for a decent life.
This Istat report on poverty in Italy concerns 2022, the first year of the right-wing and far-right government led by Giorgia Meloni.
Compared to the Italian National Statistics Institute’s report for 2021, there has been an increase of 5%.
Immigrants, young people looking for work and households with people over 65 are most affected by this alarming situation of poverty, which is unlikely to improve since the abolition of the citizenship income, equivalent to the French Revenu de Solidarité Active, will come into force on January 1ᵉʳ next year.
