Coup in Gabon: a French opponent accuses Macron of having “compromised” France

French opponent Jean-Luc Mélenchon accused President Emmanuel Macron this Wednesday of having “once again compromised France in supporting the unbearable to the end”, with his support for Gabonese President Ali Bongo.

His comments come after the overthrown of President Ali Bongo, in power for 14 years.

“Now, Gabon has only been able to get rid of its presidential puppet through an intervention by its military. Macron will have, once again, compromised France in providing support until at the end of the unbearable. The Africans are turning the page”, the head of La France insoumise added.

The Gabonese military announced on Wednesday that it had taken power, a few minutes after the electoral commission confirmed the victory of President Ali Bongo.

“France is following the situation in Gabon with the greatest attention”, declared Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, while the Elysée and the Quai d’Orsay are refraining from any comments.
