Huge explosion of unknown origin kills at least 27

Dominican authorities on Wednesday declared a one-day national mourning after the powerful explosion that left 27 dead and 59 injured on Monday, according to the latest official report.

The explosion occurred Monday at 3:10 p.m. local time, in San Cristobal, less than 30 km from the capital Santo Domingo. The cause of the tragedy is still unknown.

The blast from the explosion was felt about 500 meters away. Fires caused by the blast affected nine buildings and partially destroyed four others.

The deputy director of civil protection, Delfin Antonio Rodriguez, indicated that the fire “is under control at 90%, the fire is contained”.

Some 500 members of the emergency services are taking part in the operations.
