ECOWAS meets on Thursday to discuss possible military intervention in Niger

Chiefs of staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet this Thursday and Friday in Ghana to discuss possible military intervention in Niger, according to a regional military source, confirmed by a source at the ECOWAS.

This meeting was to be held last Saturday, before being postponed for “technical reasons”.

It will therefore take place a week after the decision taken by the leaders of the organization to deploy their “standby force” to restore to office Mohamed Bazoum, the president of Niger overthrown by a military coup on July 26.

While several countries have said they are ready to send their armies to Niger, ECOWAS says it wants to favor “the diplomatic route”.

This Tuesday, during a telephone conversation, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Malian counterpart Assimi Goïta, stressed “the importance of resolving the situation in Niger, only by peaceful politico-diplomatic means”.

Mali, a neighboring country of Niger, very quickly showed its solidarity with the military in power in Niamey.
