ECOWAS decisions after meeting on Thursday on Niger’s crisis

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ordered on August 10 the deployment of the organization’s “standby force” to restore constitutional order in Niger, without immediately specifying the form and the role of this deployment.

The President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu, who holds the rotating presidency of ECOWAS, stressed that he hoped “to reach a resolution peaceful”, adding however that a “use of force as a last resort was not excluded.”

The regional bloc thus ordered “the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger”, declared the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, at the end of the summit.

However, he did not reveal the number of men making up the standby force, their countries of origin and their current location.
