Senegalese government dissolves the main opposition party

The Senegalese government announced on Monday the dissolution of opponent Ousmane Sonko’s party, Pastef, considered as the main opposition party.

“The Pastef political party is dissolved by decree”, announced the Minister of the Interior Antoine Diome in a press release, justifying his decision by his “frequent calls to insurrectional movements” which according to him caused many deaths in March 2021 and June 2023.

“These threats constitute a permanent and serious breach of the obligations of political parties,” he added.

This announcement comes less than two hours after the indictment and detention of the opponent, for “calls for insurrection and conspiracy” against the state.
