Nigeria: fake lawyer sentenced to three years in prison

A magistrate’s court in Osogbo has sentenced a 25-year-old man to three years imprisonment for falsely presenting himself as a lawyer in Nigeria, according to reports.

“The suspect had presented himself as a barrister at law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, duped five unsuspecting members of the public, and also stole an iPhone worth N450,000,00,” according to the spokesperson Ifeanyi Adeleke.

He was pleaded guilty to the two counts bordering on impersonation of a legal practitioner contrary to Section 484 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 34 Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, and obtaining money under false pretenses contrary to Section 419 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 34 Laws of Osun State of Nigeria.

The defendant was pronounced guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment for each of the counts by Magistrate M.A. Olatunji.
