Gabonese President Ali Bongo seeks third term

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba has announced that he will be a candidate in the next presidential election, scheduled for August 26.

President Bongo who in power for nearly 14 years, announced his candidacy for the next presidential election.

“I am officially announcing today that I am a candidate in the presidential election,” he launched in front of a few hundred supporters.

The 64-year-old head of state was first elected in 2009, after the death of his father Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled the country for more than 41 years.

The formal investiture of Mr. Bongo by the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) on Monday will be a formality, the party begging him for more than a year to run for a third term.
