Senegalese President Macky Sall gives up a third term

The Senegalese head of state, Macky Sall, has announced that he will not run for a third term, even if the Constitution allows him to do so.

In a speech on Monday, Senegalese President Macky Sall surprised everyone by announcing that he would not seek a third term.

“My decision, long and carefully considered, is not to be a candidate for the next [presidential] election of February 25, 2024,” President Macky Sall announced Monday evening, and this, he specified, “even if the Constitution gives me the right to do so”.

By this declaration, the president puts an end to the suspense of several months, even several years, and thwarts the forecasts which saw him competing a third time.

“I have a code of honor and a sense of responsibility which orders me to preserve my dignity and my word”, he developed to justify his decision.
