Senegalese President Macky Sal has renounced his bid for a third term under pressure from the opposition, which denounced his illegal candidacy.
The Senegalese president has put an end to the suspense surrounding whether or not he will take part in the February 2024 presidential election.
Macky Sall announced his decision not to seek a third term on Monday in a speech broadcast on national television.
“My decision, long considered, is not to be a candidate in the presidential election of February 25, 2024, even if the Constitution gives me the right to do so,” said Macky Sall.
This announcement prompted a salvo of reactions, including that of former Niger president Mahamadou Issoufou.
