Senegal: Ousmane Sonko sentenced to 2 years in prison

The Senegalese opponent Ousman Sonko has been sentenced on Thursday June 1, 2023 to two years in prison for corruption of youth, according to reports.

The verdict is in for Ousmane Sonko in his trial against Adji Sarr.

In a highly tense political context, the Dakar criminal chamber sentenced opposition politician Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison for corruption of youth.

The prosecution had asked for ten years imprisonment for rape or 5 years imprisonment for the offense of corruption of youth.

The first consequence of this court decision is that the Senegalese opponent is no longer ineligible for the 2024 presidential elections, for which he has declared himself a candidate.

Since the beginning of this case in February 2021, the Pastef leader has always denounced a plot by the current regime to keep him out of the presidential election scheduled for February 2024.
