A priest at Christ the King Catholic parish was abducted by gunmen and taken to an unknown destination in Imo State in southeastern Nigeria, according to reports.

The man of God was abducted as he was visiting a newly built chapel in the village of Ogii.

“We ask for your prayers for his safe return,” said Father Princewill Iwuanyawu, chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, among others.

“Nigeria holds the record for the highest number of Christian kidnappings in the world of any denomination,” according to the Open Doors NGO.

In April 2023, two Catholic priests were kidnapped in southern Nigeria and were released after a week of captivity in exchange for a ransom.
