In Belgium, young minors over the age of 16 will be able to vote in the European elections in 2024, announced Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden.

The measure, adopted last week by the Belgian Federal Parliament, allows nearly 300,000 young Belgians aged 16 or 17 to cast a ballot for this election.

However, they will have to register themselves on the electoral lists, unlike adult voters.

“We are impatiently awaiting the ideas of young people on Europe,” tweeted Minister Annelies Verlinden, traveling to Molenbeek on Tuesday for the launch of registration for young Belgians on the electoral lists.

Belgium becomes the fourth European country to introduce this possibility for some of its minors: it is already possible to vote from the age of 16 for these elections in Austria and Malta. In Greece, the right to vote for European elections is open to people aged 17 and over.
