Ten deaths from the Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea

A new case of death has been recorded this Monday, April 03, 2023 of a people affected by the Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea by the country’s health authorities.

“This new case brings to 10 the number of dead people since more than two months that this virus close to Ebola rages in this country of central Africa,” confirmed the Ministry of Health.

The United Nations has expressed concern about a potential “large-scale epidemic” in Equatorial Guinea.

The authorities added that “no cases reported in the last forty-eight hours, 14 cumulative positive cases”, and “ten hospitalized”, including “two confirmed and eight suspected”.

“604 people” contact cases are being monitored, compared to 825 on March 30, the ministry said.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on Equatorial Guinea to report cases of the Marburg virus because of fears of contamination in neighboring countries.

The WHO also announced the deployment of “additional experts” and said it was “also assisting Gabon and Cameroon to strengthen preparedness and response to the epidemic”.
