Student died while denied treatment over bed space

An undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt died due to a lack of bed space in the hospital for prompt treatment in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria.

“The victim was studying in school when she suffered a crisis and was rushed to the hospital,” according to information.

She was suffering from hyperthyroidism, resulting in a rapid heartbeat and an increased rate of metabolism.

“I pleaded with the doctor to give her something to stabilize her pending the time that there would be a bed space for proper treatment seems beds were occupied,” the victim’s brother said.

“She died at the front of the emergency ward while I was looking for a bench or table to place her on,” he added.

“The government is building a new hospital that will give us more space then all these will be solved,” the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof Wasiu Adeyemo.

“We have many of our wards under renovation, and there is another building being constructed in the hospital. By the time we are done, we would have more space,” he added.
