African languages now taught in Russian schools

Some Russian secondary schools have started teaching African languages, a way to strengthen the country’s relationship with Africa, Professor Alexeï Maslov announced at the 2nd Russia-Africa Parliamentary Conference.

It is above all about Swahili and Amharic, which are languages originating in East Africa, Alexeï Maslov, director of the Institute of Asian and African Countries declared on Sunday.

The Institute of Asian and African Countries, part of Lomonosov University in Moscow, offers up-to-date training programs on culture, history and the socio-economic development of Africa.

Other African languages taught

The Institute of Asian and African Countries is relaunching the teaching of languages such as Yoruba (Nigerian language), Somali, Zulu (South Africa) and others.

“We are training a new generation of people capable of understanding the mentality and the main development models of Africa. These are people who understand that Africa is not only a large united continent, but that there is regions with different economic and political traditions”, Mr Maslov concluded.
