Rwandan authorities ban sale of unrefrigerated meat

Rwandan authorities on Tuesday announced a ban on traders selling unrefrigerated meat for at least 24 hours, local media reported.

According to the National Agency for Quality Control, Competition and Consumer Protection (Rica), fresh meat that has not been refrigerated contains organisms that can transmit diseases to consumers.

“The consequences of eating without cooling in the refrigerator is that there are still diseases in the tissues of the animal’s body that have not died,” Mbabazi Olivier, a veterinarian from Rica, told the site. news Kigali Today.

Storing food in the fridge doesn’t kill microorganisms, experts say, but it slows bacterial growth and food can be stored longer before it spoils.

Some local traders, however, said the measure would cause them losses as some customers preferred freshly slaughtered meat, the website said.
