Russia preparing offensive to conquer eastern Ukraine, observers say

According to an American think tank following the evolution of the conflict on a daily basis, the Institute For the Study of War (ISW), the Russian president ordered Army Chief of Staff, Valéri Guerassimov to prepare a major offensive in Ukraine without delay.

The instructions addressed to the general-in-chief of the occupation troops hold in one imperative: the complete possession of the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in the east of the country, already annexed by the Kremlin, by March.

In its bulletin published Thursday, the ISW cites a source within Ukrainian intelligence. It is this interlocutor who assures that the Russian general staff has been instructed to take control of the Donbass within two months. On Wednesday, Andriy Chernyak, representative of the General Directorate of Intelligence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, had unfolded the same scenario in the columns of the Kyiv Post.

The US think tank says troops deployed by Vladimir Putin have begun to take initial precautions. Thus, mobile internet access has been cut in the areas they hold. Then, from February 11, next Saturday, the entire network should be neutralized.
