A six-year-old boy has been arrested for shooting a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, according to reports.
“There was an altercation between the teacher and the student, who had the firearm, and that a single round was fired,” according to the police chief.
There were no other students involved, he added.
The teacher was in critical condition as her injuries were considered life-threatening but that there was some improvement in the last update.
The investigation is ongoing.
“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened, we need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe,” according to Newport News Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. George Parker.
