Mexico: Norma Lucía Piña president of the Supreme Court

Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, 63, has taken the helm of the country’s highest court as the first woman in Mexican history to preside over the Supreme Court.

In this country marked by feminicides, more than 9 out of 10 of which are never clarified according to Amnesty International.

Norma Lucía Piña has broken “the glass ceiling”, commented El Universal or Milenio, local newspapers, according to the words pronounced by the magistrate herself in her first speech as president of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJN).

Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2015, Norma Lucía Piña has always shown her commitment to women’s rights.

She promises to represent women even more; according to her, this is what will give her the strength to do her job.

Her fight will be mainly against gender violence, a real social scourge in Mexico.
