Major e-waste export network dismantled

Spanish authorities have arrested members of this vast network, consisting of at least 43 people, for exporting electronic waste from the Canary Islands to West Africa, mainly Senegal, Mauritania, Ghana and Nigeria.

They are accused of environmental crimes, falsification of documents and belonging to a criminal organization.

This electronic waste, mainly cell phones at the end of their life, contained toxic substances such as mercury, lead, arsenic and phosphorus.

While this electronic waste should be entrusted to a specialized company, whose mission is to dismantle them in order to avoid any risk of contamination.

They are recovered in a fraudulent way and transported to West Africa, to be transformed into second-hand articles.
