75-year-old man arrested for raping teenage girl

A court in Anambra State has remanded a 75-year-old man in custody for raping a 13-year-old girl in his care in Nigeria.

The victim was rescued by the state’s Ministry of Women and Social Welfare after she gave birth to a baby after allegedly being impregnated by the suspect.

The suspect was brought before the Children’s and Sexual and Gender Violence Court.

He was charged with three counts of defilement, carnal knowledge, emotional, verbal and psychological abuse.

Ruling on defense counsel’s bail application, the court said the rate of rape and defloration of minors in the state was alarming, adding that the defendant was old enough to be the grandfather of the complainant.

The court denied bail and ordered that the defendant be remanded to jail.
