United States: Joe Biden enacts law protecting same-sex marriage

US President Joe Biden signed Tuesday at the White House, in front of thousands of guests, a law protecting same-sex marriage throughout the United States.

This is a special moment for the American president, who, ten years ago, had made an impression by publicly saying he was in favor of marriage for all when he was Barack Obama’s vice-president.

The United States Supreme Court has guaranteed same-sex unions since 2015.

The law enacted on Tuesday repeals previous laws defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman and prohibits civil registrars – regardless of the state in which they work – from discriminating against couples “because of their sex, race, ethnicity or origin”.

“I don’t have the slightest problem with men marrying men and women marrying women with exactly the same rights as men marrying women,” the president said.
