“Nearly 6 million people without basic services in Tigray” – UNHRC

Crimes have been committed since November 2020 during the conflict between Ethiopian federal forces and Tigray forces where around 6 million people are deprived of basic services in Tigray, according to a report by the UN Human Rights Council .

Experts denounce in this document, the restrictions on access to basic services and food imposed on Tigray people by the Ethiopian federal authorities.

“In Tigray, the federal government and its allies have denied approximately access to basic services, food, health care and humanitarian assistance to 6 million people for more than a year, with a devastating impact on the civilian population,” the three-member commission of experts said.

The commission chairperson, Nazhat Shameem Khan said there are “reasonable grounds to believe that it amounts to a crime against humanity, that the federal government is using famine as a method of warfare.

She calls on the government in Addis Ababa to “immediately restore basic services.”

The experts urge international and regional bodies to “take measures that will restore peace and prevent further human rights violations.”
