Cameroon: customs seized 9,000 tramadol tablets

Cameroonian customs authorities announced the seizure of 9000 tramadol tablets last weekend in the South West region of the country.

Thanks to concerted actions with law enforcement agencies in the seaside town of Buea, in the southwest region, the smugglers, who specialize in the marketing of counterfeit drugs and especially Tramadol, were also arrested.

They claimed before the police that the 9,000 tablets seized from Nigeria were destined for the black market. The shipment was transported by motorcycle and was hidden under boxes of electronic devices.

This seizure is not the first of its kind since the beginning of the year in Cameroon. In Garoua Boulai, 483 cartons of contraband medicines were seized by customs from the CAR. The shipment was concealed in branches in a truck.

According to official figures, illicit trade, fraud, smuggling and counterfeiting constitute a huge loss of earnings for the Cameroonian economy, with losses estimated at nearly 200 billion CFA francs a year.

This situation is damaging the country’s economy as a whole, as both the public treasury and businesses are losing significant financial resources.
