President Akufo-Addo demands apology from Europe for Africans

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo recalled the harmful effects of the slave trade for the African continent and demanded an apology from Europe for Africans.

The tenant of the Jubile House said slavery stifled the economic, cultural and psychological progress of Africa.

According to the President, when the British ended slavery, all owners of enslaved Africans received reparations to the tune of $24 million. The Americans, on the other hand, received $300 for each slave they owned. Paradoxically, the Africans who were victims of this despicable act received nothing.

“Native Americans received and continue to receive reparations; Japanese-American families, who were incarcerated in internment camps in America during World War II, received reparations. Jews, six million of whom perished in the concentration camps of Hitler’s Germany, received reparations, including grants and fatherland support. It is therefore time that Africa, whose 20 million sons and daughters had their freedoms curtailed and were sold as slaves, also received reparations”, he continued before specifying that Africans deserve an apology from Europeans.

“And, even before these reparations talks conclude, the entire African continent deserves an official apology from the European nations involved in the slave trade for the crimes and damage it caused to the population, to the psyche, image and character of the African all over the world”, added the President.
