United States: heavy toll after “devastating” floods in Kentucky

At least eight people died following torrential rains which caused immense flooding in the eastern US state of Kentucky, its governor announced on Thursday, fearing that the toll could rise further.

“We are witnessing one of the worst and most devastating floods in Eastern Kentucky’s history,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.

Eight people, including an 81-year-old woman, died in the floods.

But the governor said he expected a “double-digit” death toll as a number of people are missing.

“There are a lot of Eastern Kentucky people on their roof, waiting to be rescued” he added.
