Central African Republic: arrest warrant issued for rebel leader

Central African rebel leader Nourredine Adam is struggling as the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him, for crimes committed during the country’s 2013 civil war.

The warrant was originally issued under seal in January 2019 but ICC judges had now ordered it to be unsealed, the court said.

Mr. Adam, who was then Prime Minister, is accused of crimes including torture, imprisonment, persecution, enforced disappearance and cruel treatment in detention centres.

Mr Adam is the de-facto leader of the Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (FPRC) – a rebel group that emerged out of the mainly Muslim Seleka alliance in 2014.

The 2013 coup in the Central African Republic overthrew President François Bozizé and plunged the country into civil war.

The fighting was between a coalition of armed groups that toppled Bozizé, the mostly Muslim Séléka, and supporting, mostly Christian anti-Balaka militias.

The violence would have left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced, according to the ICC.
