Qatar 2022 World Cup: homosexuality and sex outside marriage prohibited

Sex outside marriage and homosexuality will be banned at the next FIFA World Cup which will take place from November 21 to December 18, 2022 in Qatar.

For this world celebration of football, only married couples will be able to afford moments of sexual pleasure. Sexual relations for unmarried people will be officially prohibited during the tournament. Violators risk up to seven years in prison.

Qatar had already reminded that LGBT people are not welcome during this world. “If you want to express your opinions on the LGBT cause, do it in a society where it will be accepted. If you buy a ticket, it is to attend a football match and not to demonstrate. So don’t come and insult an entire society. We cannot change laws or religion for the 28 days of the World Cup,” competition chief security officer Abdullah Al Nasari said in April.

He added that “if a supporter waves a rainbow flag in a stadium and it is taken away from him, it will not be because we want to offend him, but to protect him. If we don’t, another spectator could attack him.”

In Qatar, sex outside marriage and homosexuality are illegal. Each of them is punishable by a prison sentence of up to seven years.

“I want (…) everyone to come, understand and appreciate the culture of different cultures equally. We all live on the same planet, but each of us has different cultures. We welcome everyone, but we also expect and want people to respect our culture,” said the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, a few weeks ago.
