South Sudan: water minister Manawa dies in Egypt

The South Sudanese government on Monday announced the death of Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Manawa Peter Gatkuoth Gual in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after developing chest pains.

According to First Vice President Riek Machar, the minister was flown to Egypt on Friday where he underwent surgery on Saturday.

He sadly passed away at 5 a.m. on Sunday.

“Mr Manawa was a strong student leader during his university days as well as a leader in the youth movement in the Sudan. He was a committed nationalist. He was a strong believer in reforms in the Republic of South Sudan,” Mr Machar said in a condolence message to the family.

President Salva Kiir also expressed deep sadness upon hearing the news of Mr. Manawa’s passing.
