Paralyzed man dies by assisted suicide, a first in this country

Tetraplegic for 12 years, a 40-year-old died peacefully at home after receiving the lethal drug and a self-injection device in Italy, a first in the country.

The Luca Coscioni Association, which campaigns for the right to assisted suicide and euthanasia, has received funds to provide this 40-year-old with the device and medication necessary for the operation.

“I’m finally free to fly wherever I want,” were his last words.

Italians have thus just taken a big step in terms of end-of-life rights.

MPs in the country voted in favor of the law that would authorize “voluntary medically assisted death” for adult patients “suffering from an irreversible disease with an unfortunate prognosis”, causing them “absolutely intolerable physical and psychological suffering”.
