Somalia: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appoints new PM

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday appointed Hamza Abdi Barre as the new prime minister, 30 days after his election as head of the country.

President Mohamud said he chose Barre for his experience and skill, saying he is “the right man to lead the government’s ambitious reform agenda”.

The new Prime Minister is called to deal with the most important issues, foremost among which are the security issue, humanitarian aid, reconciliation between the different components of Somali society, the fight against climate change and the natural disasters, as well as the improvement of diplomatic relations with the countries of the world.

The PM, 48, said he was happy to have the president’s confidence.

“I promise to work to realize Sheikh Mohamud’s ambitions, starting with the formation of a government of consensus and the establishment of governmental institutions, as well as to work for reconciliation among Somalis,” he said.

Hamza Abdi Barre, who succeeds former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, is expected to form a new consensus government within 30 days.
