Israel and Egypt to export gas to Europe

Egypt, Israel and the European Union on Wednesday signed a natural gas deal in Cairo as Europe scrambles to cobble together an energy strategy to replace the Russian supplies it has relied on for decades, media reported.

“This will contribute to our energy security. And we are building infrastructure fit for renewables – the energy of the future,” Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, tweeted on Wednesday.

The Israeli gas is expected to be sent to liquefaction plants in Egypt and then shipped north to markets in Europe.

The Israeli energy ministry says it will allow significant exports of Israeli gas to Europe for the first time.
