Homosexuality in Sport: should we “crucify” Idrissa Gana Gueye?

Paris Saint Germain’s player Idrissa Gana Gueye angered the LGBTQ+ community by his absence from the pitch during PSG’s trip to Montpellier on May 14, a day dedicated to the fight against homophobia in the world.

Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye watched his teammates win from the stands. For his coach, the reasons for this absence are “personal”.

“He was in the group but for personal reasons, he was in the stands. He was not injured“, explained Mauricio Pochettino.

But according to the French media RMC Sport, Idrissa Gueye did not want to play with a jersey with rainbow flocking for the day of the fight against homophobia and in support of the LGBTQ + community.

The player’s choice is variously appreciated.

While some Internet users say they understand the player’s choice, others accuse him of being homophobic.

“Why force a person to the unique thought of others, the actions of others? Where is free will in the story? Where is the democracy in the story? Everyone is free to join or not to this, no one has the right to force a person who does not adhere to this to participate, whether he is athletic or not“, commented a user on the newspaper’s website The Independent.

“The fight against discrimination of all kinds is essential! This person should be removed from professional sport in France!!! Athletes must lead by example!”, thinks another.

Last season, at the same time, Idrissa Gana Gueye was absent during the day against homophobia for a “gastro”. Simple coincidence or assumed choice? On closer inspection, “the PSG midfielder is obviously not ready to bow to the diktat of the LGBTQ+ lobbies”, believes another internet user who is asking to stop suing Gana Gueye.
