Ethiopia: About 600,000 children out of school due to drought

At least 600,000 children in Ethiopia are out of school, the result of a severe drought that is forcing many families to move to other parts of the country.

According to Gianfranco Rotigliano, the UNICEF representative in the country, these children no longer go to school because teachers have also deserted the classrooms.

“Many young girls are given in marriage because their parents can no longer provide for them. They have to travel hundreds of kilometers to find water,” he said.

Around $1.39 billion was raised at a donors’ conference in Geneva on Tuesday, April 26.

The UN said the donations were aimed at helping the Horn of Africa country fight famine.
