Unidentified gunmen abducted an American nun in northern Burkina Faso on Monday, the bishop of the local diocese of Kaya said on Tuesday.
The West African country faced a spiral of violence since 2015, attributed to jihadist movements affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
More than 2,000 people died and at least 1.7 million people had to flee their homes.
The current president, Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, a 41-year-old army officer, led soldiers to oust Mr Kaboré, who had faced months of protests for his failure to stem a jihadist insurgency in the north and east of the country.
